  • A couple from Illinois has made a pizza-flavored beer

  • Local Milwaukee stores have started selling Mamma Mia Pizza Beer

  • The beer is brewed with tomatoes, garlic, oregano and basil

  • The owners suggest drinking the beer out of a wine glass

Gross. That's the response Tom Seefurth receives when he asks someone to try his new product, pizza-flavored beer.

But most people are surprised when they taste Mamma Mia Pizza Beer and actually enjoy it, Seefurth said.

Then, people often wonder if there's a specific way to drink the beer. Using a wine glass, which allows a drinker to smell the full aroma of the beer, is the best way to taste the beer but not the only way, Seefurth said.

"We're kind of believers of do whatever you like to do," Seefurth said. "This is Pizza Beer. We don't have rules."

Mamma Mia Pizza Beer, created by Seefurth, 44, and his wife Athena, started selling in Milwaukee a few weeks ago. The beer, which is brewed with tomatoes, basil, oregano and garlic, is also available in Chicago, Madison and Wausau, Wis., Seerfuth said.

"How many married couples are making beer together?" he said.

The pair, who jointly run the company, demonstrate their beer at grocery and liquor stores while wearing white aprons and chef hats under the personas Chef Tom and Chef Athena, he said.

Pizza Beer is brewed and bottled under a contract with Sprecher Brewing Co. in Glendale, Wis., and the beer is distributed through Beechwood Distributors, in New Berlin, Wis., said Seefurth, who began brewing the concoction in Campton Township, Ill. in 2006.

Many drinkers pick up different flavors when sampling the beer, but primarily taste the oregano and garlic, he said.

"When you take a sip of it, you're definitely tasting beer," Seefurth said. "Once you swallow the beer, that's when you get the essence of pizza in the background."

The beer complements many different types of food.

"This beer goes with pizza, gyros, hot dogs and anything with garlic in it," Seefurth said. "The sky's the limit."

Jeff Hamilton, vice president at Sprecher, said Pizza Beer should gain notoriety through sampling and word of mouth.
